To form an insight to design against you combine:

• What you heard & what you saw
• Interpretation of those observations & your intuition as a designer

Insights can be truly insightful and have a strong tension as an opportunity to design against, or they can be minor and never evolve past that discovery phase.  But all insights should be new to you and help harden your point of view.
